Over the last few weeks we have been learning about setting traps. One of the people who helped up do this was Kauri.Kauri came in and taught us how to set the tracking tunnels. We used a ink pad and on top of the ink was peanut butter. This is how the tracking tunnel would work. Every few weeks we would come down and check the tracking tunnels. There would be a part with ink on it so the animal would get ink on their feet and we would find out what animal is going through the small tunnel. Then put peanut butter on top of the ink and the animal would eat the peanut butter. It wouldn't kill the animal though. The tracking tunnel is too small so animals like cats and dogs couldn't get through. We found some footprints and 3 of the peanut butter was gone. We found mouse footprints and rat footprints, we even think a cat got their claws in for a taste.
Kauri has be bringing traps to show us. We haven't been putting that in the bush just in case her dogs got in and got hurt! Kauri found a stoat at wainui beach in Gisborne. Yesterday on thursday Kauri showed us how to be safe when setting a trap.
.1. Don't put your hands in well the the trap is set
.2. Put peanut butter in the trap
.3. Look for a bushy place or flat place where you think the pest is.
